Ruby, Ruby, Ruby.
I knew from the beginning she was a manipulative bitch. One thing that Dean put together that I didn't was that she was purposefully waiting between giving Sam fixes. That probably just made him crave it worse and take more blood due to the depth of the cravings he was feeling.
From the beginning, since I first saw her, I knew she wasn't planning to actually help Sam (and Dean). The whole show has revolved around the plans that the Demons have had. We have never been told exactly what their plans are and we have been lead to believe that there are probably several different ones.
But, what if Azaezel and Lilith's plans collided? Perhaps Azaezel actually wanted Lucifer set free. He built the ultimate soldier to lead his army- the army to free Lucifer and bring on the Apocalypse. Sam is that soldier and it is Demon blood that gives him power and Demon blood that allows him to kill Demons.
So, the final seal can only be opened by Lucifer's Lieutenant, Lilith. Obviously she doesn't seem to happy about that fact now. She came to make a deal with Sam to forego her plans in return for Dean and Sam's deaths. Why? Because Sam is pretty much the only one who can stop her. Considering the effect the demon knife had on Alistair (a slightly lesser demon than Lilith), I'm guessing it wouldn't quite be able to do the job. Plus the gun is gone, likely in the hands of demons.
I think Lilith started things without fully realizing what it would mean. And it means that she'll die- she said it herself that she won't survive to see the Apocalypse. She said it like she was certain of it.
So here's what I think it is:
Ruby worked for Azaezel, maybe she's Meg and maybe she's not.
Azaezel was going to use his demon army to release Lucifer. After all a lot of them seemed enamored with him (Sin City).
Lilith is having fun in the world and either means to or accidentally, enables the beginning of the apocolypse. She doesn't realize the cost. This is done through the deal the crossroads demon makes.
Now, Lilith just doesn't like Sam at all because he was Azaezel's pawn and uses Deans deal as a way to attempt to kill Sam (and because they went after her on the eve of Dean's death). She wasn't looking for them so Dean probably wasn't that big of a deal.
John had been Azaezel's original 'righteous man' but he didn't break (or wasn't the right person) and escaped. This set Azaezel's plans back.
When Dean got to hell Alistair worked to break him and thus the first seal. Heaven saved him after the first seal was broken.
Lilith starts breaking seals/not stopping them. It isn't just lilith though, it's every demon like the ones in Sin City. They want Lucifer free.
There is something going on in the Angel ranks that is leading to the Angels actually letting (probably in part unknowingly) the Demons go free. Anna is trying to stop this, Castiel is torn between Heaven's orders and Anna's opinions.
Ruby is still following Azaezel's plan. She gets Sam's trust and turns him away from Dean. Manipulating him into believing he can stop the final seal from breaking.
In actuality, the final seal is to kill Lilith and Sam is the tool they will use to do it. Where he would have original lead the armies of hell to breaking the first seal according to Azaezel's plan... Sam now does it without actually meaning to.
Sam believes he has good intentions with his actions. In actuality he will be the one to bring on the apocolypse...
...unless Dean can stop it. And let's face it, Dean is the only one who could possibly stop Sam from doing anything.
Right now though? After that fight? It's looking like Sam's going to bring on Hell unless Dean steps to the plate and do the one thing he can't.
He promised Sam once to kill him if he every became something he wasn't.
Dean has never wanted to do anything to hurt Sam, he gave his soul to the fires of hell to save Sam's life.
And now? Dean is at the beck and call of heaven and Sam is the one about to stop the apocolypse.
And Dean is going to have to be the one to stop Sam.
It's going to be a tough choice... and I really hope that the show choose to redeem!Sam somehow and not let him be a total evil!Sam at the end of this season. Because if they don't? We're going to see Dean and Sam fighting each other constantly next season... might be interesting but it won't be the brotherly show we've all loved.
I can't wait to see how this all ends.
Bobby
I loved the scene with Bobby and Dean and the one with Bobby and Sam. He truly loves them as if they were his sons.
Dean
At the end of this episode it was so heartbreaking. Dean laying on the floor, almost trying to hold onto something, grasp the whole reality of the situation. Heartbreaking. God Jensen did an excellent job acting that last little bit out. The pain that Dean was in... I almost expected him to burst into full blown sobs and scream.
Sam
He thinks he's in the right but he's being used. He's so blinded by revenge and Ruby's designs that he couldn't even hear a word that Dean was saying. He is so fucked up right now.
Sam'n'Dean
Show better make them better at the end of the episode, at least make Sam realize what he's done and attempt to get forgiveness from Dean. Need a chick flick moment, almost.
Can it be next Thursday now? *puppy dog eyes*

Date: 2009-05-08 04:45 am (UTC)Now why the Angels can't just get rid of Sam to prevent it... I don't know.
Or maybe Dean has to be the one that kills Lilith, because he's the only one that can kill her without opening the last seal?
But if Sam kills her it opens the seal?

Date: 2009-05-08 04:51 am (UTC)This. It's already shown that the Angels have great power, so why couldn't Castiel have just zapped Sam in the first place when he was locked up in Bobby's basement and be done with it?
Now that I think about it, I really think Castiel is being played (kinda because I fangirl him and refuse to see him as an antagonist *grin*) just for that. If Sam remained locked up in Bobby's safe room, he would have been out of the picture and Dean would be free to do whatever the Angels tell him to do. Instead, he releases a man who is desperate to kill Lillith and thus bring about the end of the world.
I have something more to say, but I don't want to ruin it if you didn't see the preview for next week's episode.

Date: 2009-05-08 04:55 am (UTC)Castiel did what he had to do to keep himself in the world where he can help Dean. He's being watched closer now, though, and it's a dangerous time for any who defy orders. Whether he wants to or not he has to follow orders... in the end he's going to have to chose to do what is asked of him or stick a proverbial knife through those orders and do what's right.

Date: 2009-05-08 04:48 am (UTC)I've desperately got to rewatch all the Sam scenes before I can even begin to wrap my mind around how I'm feeling about him tonight. Those hallucinations of his damn near killed me.
All I've got to say is that we better get some answers next week - about Ruby and her purpose, about Azazel's plan, about the meaning of Sam going dark side and why Castiel let him go and oh so many other things.

Date: 2009-05-08 04:52 am (UTC)I was flashing back to the episode "skin" in the first season. All the things the shapeshifter said and then him strangling Sam...
Sam is only hearing what he wants to hear and what he fears others think. He isn't really hearing the 'true' words Dean is speaking.
Dean does know Sam better than Sam wants to admit... it's Sam that really doesn't know Dean.
Yeah, Dean is left with nothing... it is heart breaking. Sam was his everything, and now he's gone.

Date: 2009-05-08 05:10 am (UTC)Sam is only hearing what he wants to hear and what he fears others think. He isn't really hearing the 'true' words Dean is speaking.
I definitely think this is true and has been for some time. It's just that as Sam grows more and more desperate, the more censure he's expecting and so the more he lashes out, even when no insult is intended or even stated. I'm seriously longing for the day to come when Sam has his eyes opened and realizes exactly what he's throwing away.
Dean does know Sam better than Sam wants to admit... it's Sam that really doesn't know Dean.
I think it's highly telling that we've seen so many references to Dean knowing Sam inside and out and absolutely none for the reverse this season. Starting in 4x01, Dean knew instinctively what alias Sam was using, and that after 40 freaking years in Hell no less! Even if he didn't remember his time down south then, he still was able to guess with his first try the name Sam would have chosen four months after they last saw each other.
And that line about what doesn't Dean know about Sam was repeated almost verbatim tonight with Bobby. Dean knows Sam, was able to guess immediately and without hesitation Sam's MO when escaping. And in return, we have Dean Smith's angry line to Sam Wesson about how he doesn't know him at all.
Oh, Dean.

Date: 2009-05-08 04:56 am (UTC)I didn't even think about that. You could be right there. It definitely makes me think.
I also agree that Lilth could very well be the last seal. Since she knows she wont be in the aftermath.

Date: 2009-05-08 05:05 am (UTC)Plus Meg started out in a similar fashion to Ruby. Played a girl and then flirted with Sam.
I think "meg" failed because Sam had no reason to want/need to trust her. With Deans deal it was the perfect opening for "ruby" to be able to worm her way into the fold and gain some semblance of trust.
Plus since she'd possessed him, meg would have a really good idea of the inner workings of Sam's mind, how to best go about gaining his trust and all.

Date: 2009-05-08 05:15 am (UTC)I never even thought about all the things they have in common. I really hope it's explained. About as much as I hope Ruby is not in the next season. I am SO over her. I don't want to have a whole season of fighting brothers. Especially if there's the chance that the 5th season will be the last.
