Summary: Dean's opinions and morals don't matter when Manticore gives orders.

Two years before Sam leaves for College, Pre-Series DA (spoilers through 2x11)

The bad thing about living on the outside most of the time is that it brings pesky things like morals into the mix. Dean always had a strict moral code, one that his father had instilled upon him and Sam growing up. You kill the monsters, hunt the supernatural, and you save the innocents.

The thing about Manticore is that they don't care about innocents, it doesn't matter if the person they tell you to kill is the bad guy or a bystander. You do it or you die.

When Sandoval told him to take out Rachel along with her father it was the firs time Dean was forced to go against his moral code. The first time he would be forced to hurt someone he actually cared about.

And, Dean did care about her. Sure he dated girls, fooled around when he was home, with his family, but he never actually cared for them. Between moving every few months, sometimes every couple weeks, and his periodic trips to Manticore ("Hunting trips" as he told Sam)- Dean just didn't have time and didn't want to get attached. He cared about Rachel more than anyone he ever met outside of his family.

If only he had met her in another time or place.

It still didn't set right with him, he didn't want to be the cause of her death.

As Dean put the explosives he had been proved together he grit his teeth, hesitating slightly with nerves. He had been on missions in the past, assassinated people, and killed dozens of supernatural creatures. He had never been so nervous in his life.

Dean had to do it though, it was his mission.

As his father always said: "You do what you have to do and you shut up about it."

That applied to both hunting and Manticore. He hated that this was his life, that he was one of the best soldiers Manticore had available due to his real world experience. But he didn't have a choice, never did when it came to himself. Everything was about Sam, Hunting and revenge, or Manticore. Until he "aged out" according to the contract his parents signed he was obligated to work in some capacity to Manticore or he'd be hunted down.

So Dean'd do the job and hate himself at the end of the day.

He'd set the trap, blow the bomb, debrief, and go home.

494 followed orders.

But Dean couldn't go against his moral code- or his feelings.

Flawless 12 (Ramble Fic #15)

A.Note: In the end I wasn't too happy with how this turned out- but I was interrupted in the middle and lost my train of thought. Oh well. I'll probably write another few later on about this ep and the events described.
