May be verses Maybe

surevestaReading fanfic and people use 'may be' verses 'maybe'.
It may be this.
Maybe.
Maybe is an adverb: Maybe we can visit the king.
May be is an auxiliary verb + linking verb: We may be able to visit the King.
The adverb was derived from the verb phrase in the 15th century:
Maybe I'll see you later = It may be (that) I'll see you later.

In other words I read way too many fanfics that have characters say "May be," instead of "Maybe,"
(Note, I am NOT referring to the stories/authors I am currently betaing for in this post.)
